The School of Sustainable Systems and Technologies (SSST) at IISER Bhopal is an interdisciplinary hub for education, research, innovation, and policy engagement focused on solving sustainability challenges through systems thinking and technology-driven solutions.
Established at a time when India is accelerating its transition toward a low-carbon, resource-efficient, and resilient economy, SSST aims to develop the next generation of sustainability professionals, researchers, entrepreneurs, and leaders capable of addressing complex challenges across industry, energy, environment, and society.
Situated within IISER Bhopal's vibrant ecosystem of science, engineering, economics, and humanities, SSST combines rigorous scientific foundations with real-world problem solving to create impactful solutions for national development and global sustainability.
The School initially focuses on three core thrust areas - Energy Systems, Sustainable Manufacturing, and Economics, Environment, Society, and Governance (EESG), which address critical challenges associated with industrial sustainability and India's green transition. However, SSST is envisioned as a dynamic and evolving platform that extends beyond these initial domains. Guided by its emphasis on sustainable systems and technologies, the School will progressively expand into broader areas such as food and agricultural systems, ecosystem services, planetary and human health, and sustainable urban and regional systems.
Our Vision
To establish SSST as an institution of eminence in interdisciplinary scholarship leading to research, innovation, design, and deployment of sustainable systems and technologies, while building requisite skillsets to deliver lasting impacts.
Our Mission
To deliever academic programmes and conduct advanced research in sustainability devolted to nation building, rooted in systems thinking.
To build and deploy integrated technologies and systems, supported by strong physical and didgital infrastructure.
To create and administer a 'Data Commons for Sustainability' integrating environmental, industrial, and socio-economic datasets for research and policy.
To build advanced skillsets and support innovation, including sustainability ventures.
To collaborate with global institutions and industry to co-create knowledge and solutions.
